Title: Understanding Dust Coagulation and Volatile Evolution in Planet-Forming Disks

Abstract:
Planets form in the midplanes of protoplanetary disks around young stars. At this point, however, our understanding of planet formation is incomplete and we are unable to confidently connect planetary properties (e.g., mass, size, composition) to the physical and chemical conditions of the gaseous disks in which they form. In this talk, I will review some of the outstanding problems associated with the first stage of planetary assembly: the creation of km-sized planetesimals out of microscopic dust particles. I will discuss possible solutions to these issues and describe how models that connect the processes of dust coagulation and volatile (e.g., water, carbon-monoxide) evolution can be used together with observations of young protoplanetary disks to further our understanding of this key phase in the planet formation process.
