SODEI International Scholars Task Force Meeting

The International Scholars Task Force* in the Steward Observatory Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group (SODEI) has been working hard to create a more inclusive environment for international scholars over the past year, and we want to celebrate that!

In a similar spirit to the open meeting we had in January, we would like to invite you to a meeting with the International Scholars Task Force, to learn what we’ve been up to and how you can get involved.

The first 15-20 min of the meeting will consist of a presentation of the task force and our accomplishments so far. We will explain the Allyship Program which rolled out last semester. The program pairs incoming international students and postdocs with allies at Steward that have volunteered to help the internationals settle into Tucson and integrate into the new country, city, and department.

“The World at Your Table”: After the initial presentation, we are preparing an event to show you preparations of food from all over the world, with presentations from our very own scholars. It will be a celebration of the many different cultures and nationalities present at Steward and hopefully you’ll get inspired to try something new. Afterwards, we’ll share all the recipes on our website.
!! If YOU have a special recipe that you would like to share !! and you’re willing to make a short slideshow with pictures of the preparation and write up the recipe, please let us know, as we’re looking for volunteers, American or international scholars alike.

When: Friday, May 28th @ 3:00 - 4:00 pm (we may run a little over time with the food show)
Where: (although hopefully we can soon repeat the event in person for people to taste the food as well!)

We will share the slides/recording with you afterwards and upload the recipes to our website.

Feel free to email us at any time at to request an invite to our SODEI Slack channel where you can keep up to date with current news, upcoming meetings, and events.

Have a great summer!

The International Scholars Task Force

* In a nutshell, the goals of this task force are to:
Bridge the gap between domestic and international scholars by promoting activities that join the two groups.
Provide easily accessible help to incoming international scholars, so as to make them feel at ease and well taken care of at Steward. This includes:
Raise awareness among American scholars about the problems faced by international scholars.
